The members of the Interim Minister search committee are pleased to announce that the Church Council has supported their recommendation that the Rev. Dr. Bruce P. MacLeod be called to serve as our Intentional Interim Minister beginning January 2020.
Bruce grew up in eastern Massachusetts. He graduated from high school in Newburyport where his father was pastor of a United Church of Christ congregation.
He had a strong sense of call to ministry from a very young age. Music played an important role in his life and he sang in church choirs and at school. He graduated from Marietta College in Ohio with a BA in Psychology and a provisional secondary teaching certificate. He taught reading and study skills for two years before attending seminary.
Bruce earned Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Andover Newton Theological School. His Doctor of Ministry project was titled Articulating Their Faith: Valuing Small Group Theological Reflection in the Local Church. He has spent much of his ministry helping laypeople in New England UCC congregations find ways to talk about faith that are appropriate for them.
He was ordained in Newburyport by the Essex Association of the United Church of Christ in 1985. He served two call positions in twelve years and has served nine intentional interim pastorates. He took the Interim Ministry Network's training program in 2001-2002 and has received training by the Massachusetts Conference of the UCC as a Church Vitality Coach.
Bruce served with the Field Education program at Andover Newton Theological School from 1997-2015 as a supervisor and as a facilitator for small groups of field education students seeking to integrate their work in ministry settings with their seminary classes. He served as the interim Director of Field Education in 2011 and 2012.
Since 1992, he has participated in several "border crossing"/"immersion" travel seminars. These have included two with the Plowshares Institute (Simsbury, CT) to South Africa and China. Other seminars included one to Israel, one to Chile with the Massachusetts Conference of the UCC, and to South India and Myanmar, through Andover Newton.
We are excited to have Bruce joining our congregation and bring our faith community even closer together.
