Lent is a season of reflection, transformation, and renewal. In the United Church of Christ, we embrace this sacred time not as a journey of deprivation but as an invitation to deeper discipleship. It is a season where we intentionally turn toward God, seeking to realign our hearts with Christ’s call to love, justice, and mercy.
Rooted in Jesus’ forty days in the wilderness, Lent reminds us that faith is not about easy answers but about trust, resilience, and grace. It is a time to ask: Where is God calling us to serve? How can we embody Christ’s love in a world that aches for healing? What habits of selfishness, fear, or indifference need to be set aside so that we might walk more fully in the way of Jesus?
Lent is not just an individual journey but a communal one. As we pray, fast, and give, we do so not to prove our worth but to recognize the abundant grace that already sustains us. In the UCC, we affirm that this grace is not reserved for a select few but poured out for all people. We journey together, lifting one another up, advocating for justice, and working toward the wholeness of creation.
As we move toward the cross and the promise of resurrection, Lent calls us to remember that transformation is always possible. Love is stronger than fear, justice is stronger than oppression, and life is stronger than death. With open hearts and open hands, we step forward, trusting that God is still speaking, still shaping us, and still calling us to be bearers of love in the world.
